Why New born baby Blood Pressure is low or high?

What is Normal Blood pressure in newborn babies? 

The normal blood pressure of new born baby is slightly lower than older children or adults.  Besides, the normal range of blood pressure also varies due to number of factors like what is baby’s gestational age, what is the height of baby and how well his health is?

 

Two numbers are noted at the time of measuring blood pressure. The first one is diastolic and other one is systolic.

 

Generally, The Diastolic blood pressure of a healthy new born baby is in between 50 to 70 mmHg and Systolic Blood  pressure of a healthy new born baby’s in between 30 to 45 mmHg.  

 

Measuring accurate blood pressure in newborn baby may be tricky one and to perform this task, specialized equipment and training is needed to obtain accurate results.

 

To get accurate result of blood pressure in newborn babies, the doctors are required to take multiple readings so as to ascertain the actual and correct blood pressure.

 

 

Why New born babies have low Blood Pressure? 

In general, new born babies have low blood pressures as compare to adults for the reasons that their vessels are not only in development stage but also their vessels are small and flexible.

 

With the passage of time as the baby grows, his/her blood vessels get rigid and blood pressure starts rising to the pressure as of older children or adults i.e 120/80 mmHg, if not affected by any other medical condition.   

 

What are the risks associated with low blood pressure in newborn babies? 

As mentioned  above that usually new born babies have low blood pressure which is a temporary hence the doctors are aware of aware of it and don’t take it as a matter of concern because  this problem resolves as the time goes.

However, Severe and long term low blood pressure in newborn babies should not be ignored in any way because it may be signs of some risks, which may include but not limited to the following:-

  1. Due to low pressure, supply of oxygen and nutrients to the organs of babies can be affected, hence causing poor organ perfusion. Besides, the important parts of bodies like brain, kidneys, and liver may also be damaged.  
  2. If low blood pressure is severe in new born babies, it may cause even their growth restrictions/ delay, disabilities  like cerebral palsy, loss of hearing, or vision problems.
  3. Breathing problems may also have to be faced by the new born babies complaining of Low blood pressure.  
  4. Other complications may appear in new born babies having low blood pressure due to their imbalance in electrolytes level.
  5. Premature babies are more likely to have low blood pressure as compared to full term new born babies
  6. Newborns with infections such as sepsis may have low blood pressure due to the body's response to the infection.
  7. Due to heart or lung problems like congenital heart defects or respiratory distress syndrome, newborn babies may have low blood pressure
  8. The medications given to the mother during her pregnancy or to the newborn after delivery may have impact causing low blood pressure in baby. Such medicines can cause the blood vessels to relax, which becomes the cause of low blood pressure.

 

Why New born babies have High Blood Pressure? 

It has been seen that usually, in new born babies, their pressure are lower as compare to the children of more ages or adults but its not the hard and fast rule because, high blood pressure can also be seen in new born babies due to many reasons like heart problems, inherited medical condition, problem in kidney, or complications during pregnancy or delivery.

 

The reason for blood pressure in newborn babies being low is their under developing cardiovascular system which is preparing to be adjusted outside of the mother’s body.
